Afield collaborated with the Montréal firm Figurr on a proposal for the Government of Québec. The project was for a competition geared towards rethinking and futuring Québec schools and in particular to develop a concept with one particular school in mind: École primaire Pierre-Elliot Trudeau School in Gatineau, Québec. The project concept emphasised the centrality of imagination to children’s well-being. With a progressive notion of childhood development—understanding that all children do not learn in the same way—a sense of how the whole child moves in space was foregrounded in the design. In many ways this underlined educators’s move towards the foregrounding of play-based learning especially in the early years. Towards this end, the design included markers of continuity between indoors and outdoors with, for example, large windows and easy access to an all-season garden as “textbook” that in many ways echoes what Afield proposed, albeit at a different scale, with its Democratic Early Childhood Development/DemocraticArch and Greening Schoolyards projects.
